NAIDOC is the most significant celebration on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander calendar, Australia wide. It is time for celebrations of Aboriginal people, culture and resilience. The inaugural Illawarra Aboriginal Art Trail, during NAIDOC is about reaching out to all the community and inviting people to enjoy the diverse representations of contemporary Indigenous art from the area/Illawarra.
The Aboriginal Art Trail is designed to highlight Aboriginal artists in the local area by showcasing their works. The artists work in a range of mediums including acrylic on canvas, ceramics, textiles, bangalow leaves, etchings and drawings. The trail will show that Aboriginal culture is a living and vibrant culture and has been sustained for thousands of years along beautiful Illawarra coast. The Aboriginal Art Trail runs from Thirroul, down through Wollongong and on to Kiama. There are ten galleries and art spaces along the way to be visited.
